Chapter 4 - Natalie Knew the Crash Was Coming

Claudia moved toward the phone.

I stepped away.

"Maria, keep talking."

"Mr. Whitaker, is Claudia there?"

"Yes."

The line went silent.

Then:

"I can't speak with her listening."

Claudia's face hardened.

"She's a liar."

I looked at my wife.

"Go into the living room."

"This is my—"

She stopped herself.

Ethan's house.

I almost smiled.

"Living room."

Mark followed her.

I stayed in the study and closed the door.

"Now."

Maria exhaled.

"I didn't quit."

"I suspected that."

"Claudia fired me."

"Why?"

"Because I photographed Ethan's bruises."

My stomach tightened.

"Bruises?"

"Small ones. Mostly from being grabbed."

"When?"

"Three weeks ago."

"By Claudia?"

"Once."

I closed my eyes.

"Mark?"

Silence.

"Maria."

"I saw him pull Ethan by the arm when he wouldn't stop crying."

I felt sick.

My son had been hurting his own child before today.

"Did you report it?"

"I told Henry."

Of course.

"What did Henry say?"

"That family matters should remain private."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Then he called me the next morning and said if I kept taking photographs, the family would accuse me of mistreating Ethan."

Blackmail.

"Do you still have them?"

"Yes."

"Send everything."

"I will."

"What about Natalie?"

Maria became quiet.

"She hired me."

I frowned.

"Mark told me he hired you after Natalie died."

"No."

"How long did you know Natalie?"

"Six months before the crash."

My heartbeat accelerated.

"Why didn't I know?"

"She asked me not to tell you."

The sentence hurt.

Another person had protected me with ignorance.

"What was she doing?"

"Watching Mark."

I sat down.

"Why?"

"She thought he was hiding money."

Mark.

Not David.

Not Henry.

My son.

"How much?"

"I don't know."

"Did she think Mark stole from the company?"

"At first."

"And later?"

"She changed her mind."

"Why?"

Maria whispered:

"Because the account used Richard Whitaker's identity."

My name.

"She knew I wasn't doing it."

"Yes."

"How?"

"She tested the signatures."

That sounded like Natalie.

Before becoming a mother, she had worked in forensic compliance.

Sharp.

Careful.

Too smart for people who wanted secrets buried.

"What did she find?"

"Some signatures were digital copies."

"Some?"

Maria hesitated.

"Some were real."

A chill moved through me.

"Mine?"

"Yes."

I remembered years of board packets.

Trust restructurings.

Pages placed in front of me by Henry.

Documents I signed without reading every line.

Someone had hidden fraud inside legitimate paperwork.

"Who prepared the real ones?"

"She believed Henry did."

I closed my eyes.

"Then why did she continue working with him?"

"She didn't know whether he understood what he was doing."

That distinction mattered.

A collaborator.

Or another tool.

"What happened three days before the crash?"

"She went to Henry's office."

"Why?"

"She found an old partnership ledger."

"What partnership?"

"I don't know."

"Maria."

"She never told me the name."

Then she added:

"But she told me it began before Richard Whitaker owned Whitaker Development."

My father had founded the company before I took control.

This went back a generation.

"What did she want you to do if something happened?"

"Protect Ethan."

My throat tightened.

"And give you the cedar box."

I remembered Ethan's note.

Don't trust Mark.

"Where is it?"

"In Ethan's closet."

I stood.

"Claudia was in there earlier."

"Then get it now."

I opened the study door.

Mark stood outside.

Listening.

I stared at him.

He didn't apologize.

"Move."

"Dad, Maria is manipulating you."

"How long have you known she worked for Natalie?"

He said nothing.

I went upstairs.

Ethan's bedroom door was open.

The cedar box sat on the closet shelf.

Claudia was standing in front of it.

I stopped.

"Step away."

She turned.

"Richard."

"Step away."

She held something behind her back.

I moved closer.

"What do you have?"

"Nothing."

I grabbed her wrist.

A folded letter fell onto the carpet.

Natalie's handwriting.

RICHARD.

I picked it up.

Claudia whispered:

"Don't read that."

"Why?"

"Because Natalie was paranoid."

I looked at her.

"Paranoid enough to die?"

Her face tightened.

I opened the letter.

Richard,

If you are reading this, I failed to tell you while I still could.

I think Mark's debt is being manufactured.

I stopped.

Mark stood in the doorway.

"What?"

I kept reading.

Someone wants him desperate enough to sign away Ethan's future.

Mark leaned against the frame.

Claudia whispered:

"No."

Natalie's letter continued.

The money missing from Whitaker Development is moving through an account carrying Richard's name, but Richard did not open it.

I have proof.

My pulse hammered.

The proof is inside the cedar box beneath the false bottom.

I emptied the box.

Photographs.

USB drives.

Bank records.

Then I found the panel.

Under it was a red folder.

Mark reached toward it.

I pulled it away.

"Don't."

"Dad."

"Your wife hid this from you."

His face crumpled.

I opened the folder.

A list of wire transfers totaling $18.7 million.

Each authorized by RICHARD WHITAKER.

Except the login address belonged to someone else's office.

Whitaker Development.

Floor 14.

Executive Finance.

David Kline.

Then a final page.

Vehicle Service Authorization.

Natalie's Range Rover.

Four days before her crash.

Electronic steering module replacement.

Authorized electronically by:

RICHARD WHITAKER.

My stolen identity had authorized work on the car that later carried Natalie into a concrete barrier.

Mark whispered:

"No."

Claudia covered her mouth.

I looked at both of them.

"Someone used my name to touch Natalie's car."

Then my phone vibrated.

Maria had sent the photographs she promised.

The last image showed Natalie leaving David Kline's office three days before the crash.

Behind her, through the glass conference room, stood Henry Cole.

And Claudia.
