Chapter 3 - The Voice Behind Henry Cole

The video continued.

Henry looked uncomfortable.

"I agreed to build a neglect case. Not hurt the child."

The unseen man answered:

"Nobody asked you to hurt him."

A pause.

"We asked Claudia."

My wife went white.

I looked at her.

"What did he ask you to do?"

"Nothing."

The video kept playing.

Henry said:

"Claudia thinks this puts Mark in control."

The man laughed.

Mark stepped closer to the laptop.

"What?"

Henry:

"And Mark believes the debt disappears."

Unknown man:

"It will."

"After he signs?"

"After he signs everything."

I turned toward Mark.

"What debt?"

He stared at the screen.

"Nothing."

Claudia laughed bitterly.

"Tell him."

Mark snapped:

"Stay out of it."

"Four million dollars isn't nothing."

My stomach dropped.

"Four million?"

Mark looked at me.

"Four point six."

"For what?"

"An investment."

"What investment?"

"Commercial property."

"With whose money?"

"Private financing."

"From whom?"

He didn't answer.

The video answered for him.

Henry said:

"The lender wants Mark's assignment tonight."

The unknown voice replied:

"Good. Once his contingent inheritance is pledged, he can't back out."

I stopped the recording.

"Contingent inheritance?"

Mark sat down.

"I thought it meant whatever I eventually inherit from you."

"Show me the loan agreement."

"It's not here."

"Where?"

"Henry has it."

Claudia said:

"There's a copy upstairs."

Mark glared at her.

She ignored him and walked away.

Something had changed.

She had realized Mark had been promised one future while she had been promised another.

Two lies could sometimes break an alliance faster than one truth.

Claudia returned with a leather folder.

Inside was Mark's loan agreement.

Principal:

$4,600,000.

Fees:

$1,180,000.

Interest:

nineteen percent.

I stared at him.

"Who signs something like this?"

"I was told the project would return twelve million in six months."

"By whom?"

"David Kline."

I knew David.

Vice President of Internal Finance at Whitaker Development.

I had hired him six years earlier on Henry's recommendation.

My pulse changed.

"David arranged your loan?"

Mark nodded.

"Through a private fund."

"What fund?"

"Cedar Ridge Capital."

I searched the company registry.

Nothing obvious.

Then I saw the lender's legal agent.

Cole & Partners.

Henry's firm.

My lawyer had arranged the loan that trapped my son.

Then offered Mark a way out.

Take Ethan's trust.

I kept reading.

Collateral included:

Future inheritance interests.

Beneficial rights arising from Ethan Whitaker trusts through parental guardianship.

My stomach turned.

"You pledged Ethan's inheritance."

Mark stood.

"I was going to repay it before anything happened."

"That isn't an answer."

"I didn't know the project would collapse."

"Children don't exist to insure your mistakes."

He looked ashamed for half a second.

Then defensive again.

"You always had money."

"There it is."

"What?"

"You think because I built something, every dollar connected to me belongs to you."

"I am your son."

"And Ethan is yours."

Silence.

Claudia sat down across from him.

"David promised your debt disappeared after Richard was removed."

Mark nodded.

She whispered:

"Henry told me the house became mine."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

Her eyes flicked toward Ethan.

"Because I agreed to become guardian if the court questioned Mark's fitness."

Mark shot up.

"What?"

Claudia crossed her arms.

"You have debt."

"You told me you were helping me."

"I was."

"By replacing me?"

"I was protecting Ethan."

I nearly laughed.

"You left him outside for nine hours."

She looked away.

No one could make that sentence compatible with protection.

I returned to the memory card.

A second video.

Same room.

Later.

Henry alone.

He called someone.

"Claudia will do it."

A male voice answered.

"Good."

"She thinks the house is hers afterward."

"Let her."

"And Mark?"

"Keep him desperate."

Henry sighed.

"Richard is going to notice the signature."

"Not if the competency petition lands first."

My hands tightened.

They weren't only removing me from Ethan's trust.

They planned to declare me incompetent.

The voice continued:

"Hospital footage. Financial irregularities. Family testimony."

Henry:

"And if Richard fights?"

The man replied:

"Then show the board what Natalie found."

Everything stopped.

Mark whispered:

"Natalie?"

His late wife.

Ethan's mother.

Dead eighteen months.

I replayed the line.

Show the board what Natalie found.

I looked at Mark.

"What did Natalie find?"

His face tightened.

"Nothing."

"Wrong answer."

"Dad—"

"She was investigating something before she died."

Mark stood.

"You don't know that."

"I do now."

Claudia whispered:

"Richard."

I looked at her.

She had gone pale again.

"What?"

"Natalie came to me three days before the crash."

Mark stared at his mother.

"You never told me that."

Claudia ignored him.

"She said someone had stolen money from Whitaker Development."

"How much?"

"She wouldn't say."

"Who?"

"She said the transfers were authorized under your name."

My chest tightened.

"I never authorized theft."

"I know."

"Did she name David?"

"No."

"Henry?"

"No."

"What did she want from you?"

Claudia swallowed.

"She wanted me to tell her what happened in 1989."

I stared.

"What happened in 1989?"

Claudia looked at Mark.

Then me.

Her lips trembled.

Before she answered, the house phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

No one moved.

I answered.

A woman's voice.

"Mr. Whitaker?"

"Yes."

"My name is Maria Santos."

Ethan's former nanny.

The woman Claudia told me had quit.

"I need to tell you something before tomorrow."

"About Ethan?"

"About Natalie."

My heartbeat changed.

Maria whispered:

May you like

"She knew someone was going to kill her."
