Chapter 13 - The DNA Test Natalie Didn’t Trust

Samuel sat in my study with the old Kline ledger open.
Henry was locked in a guest room under private security.
David remained at Lake Briar with Elaine documenting the archive.
For once, nobody moved without someone watching.
I looked at Samuel.
"Did Natalie doubt Mark's paternity?"
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Claudia stepped forward.
"Why?"
"Because the DNA test was too convenient."
Mark laughed bitterly.
"Everything tonight is too convenient."
Samuel nodded.
"Natalie obtained David Junior's sample herself."
"Then the half-sibling result was real."
"Probably."
"Probably?"
He explained.
"She never had an independently verified sample from Mark."
I looked at Claudia.
"What did she use?"
"A corporate insurance specimen."
Mark frowned.
"That was mine."
"Stored under your name."
My pulse shifted.
Another identity substitution.
"Who had access?"
"Whitaker Medical Benefits."
"Which department?"
Samuel looked toward me.
"Executive Finance controlled the vendor."
David.
But he could have manipulated the sample.
Why would he?
To convince Mark they were brothers.
Another lever.
"Did Natalie test again?"
Samuel nodded.
"She tried."
"With what?"
"Hair from Mark's brush."
Mark stared.
"When?"
"The week she died."
"What result?"
Samuel didn't answer.
"Samuel."
"It excluded David Senior's line."
The room went silent.
Claudia whispered:
"No."
Mark looked at her.
"Mom."
"I was sure."
"Apparently not."
Her eyes filled.
"I didn't sleep with anyone else."
Samuel's expression changed.
That was the problem.
"Who?"
"No one!"
"Claudia."
"I was with David."
"When?"
She stopped.
I understood before she said it.
Her relationship timeline.
David disappeared.
Then she met me.
Then Mark was conceived near the overlap.
I stared.
"Me."
She whispered:
"Maybe."
Mark's face changed.
The room became painfully quiet.
He had spent hours learning I wasn't biologically his father.
Now maybe I was.
"Why didn't the original test match George Whitaker's family profile?"
Mark asked.
Samuel answered:
"Because Richard may not be George's biological son."
I laughed once.
Of course.
Of course there was another generation.
I looked at him.
"What?"
Samuel rubbed his forehead.
"Natalie found a sealed adoption notation in your birth file."
I stopped breathing.
"My birth file?"
"George raised you."
"Who fathered me?"
"I don't know."
I looked at Claudia.
She looked as stunned as I felt.
My mother had never said a word.
Samuel continued:
"Margaret told Natalie the truth shortly before she died."
"My mother?"
"Yes."
"Why not me?"
"She was ashamed."
"Of what?"
"George couldn't have children."
The room went silent.
Mark stared at me.
If George was infertile, my entire paternal lineage was wrong.
"And Robert?"
"Also not biologically George's."
My late brother.
"Same father?"
Samuel nodded.
"Apparently."
"Who?"
"Margaret never named him in writing."
I almost laughed.
A family empire built on surnames while almost nobody carried the blood they thought they did.
"What does this have to do with Mark?"
Samuel looked at Claudia.
"If Richard's biological father shared ancestry with David Senior, some DNA comparisons could produce misleading relationship results."
Too complicated without originals.
"Then we need direct testing."
"Yes."
"Tonight."
Mark shook his head.
"I don't care."
I looked at him.
"I do."
"Why?"
"Because someone else cares enough to forge it."
That mattered.
He understood.
Claudia whispered:
"If Richard is Mark's biological father..."
No one finished the sentence.
It wouldn't erase her deception.
It wouldn't erase Mark's choices.
But it would expose how David manipulated him.
Samuel opened Natalie's memo.
She wrote:
Do not let lineage determine who deserves Ethan.
Good.
She understood.
The DNA matters only because the people stealing from him are using it.
Then:
The most important proof is not blood. It is the original Cedar North authorization.
I frowned.
"What authorization?"
Samuel looked at Julia's printed copy.
At midnight, Cedar North transfers to Ethan only if Natalie is legally confirmed deceased.
My pulse changed.
"She is deceased."
Samuel didn't answer.
Mark looked at him.
"Dad?"
My skin turned cold.
Natalie's death certificate.
Car crash.
Closed casket because of severe injuries.
Mark identified jewelry.
Not her face.
I knew where this was going and hated it.
"No."
Samuel raised one hand.
"I'm not saying she's alive."
"Then what?"
"Her death certificate was amended."
"When?"
"Six months ago."
"Why?"
"Identity discrepancy."
Mark went white.
"What discrepancy?"
"Fingerprint record."
Silence.
"The body recovered from the vehicle did not match Natalie's archived employment fingerprints."
Mark backed into a chair.
Claudia covered her mouth.
My heartbeat hammered.
"Who discovered this?"
"Julia."
My executive assistant again.
"Why didn't she tell us?"
"She told Henry."
Everyone looked toward the locked guest room.
I went there.
Opened the door.
Henry sat on the bed.
"You knew Natalie's body didn't match."
He stared at me.
"Yes."
Mark stepped beside me.
"Where is my wife?"
"I don't know."
"Is she alive?"
"I DON'T KNOW!"
That sounded real.
Henry stood.
"Julia found the discrepancy while auditing Cedar North."
"Why hide it?"
"Because if Natalie was alive, every trust transfer could be challenged."
"So you protected assets over truth."
"No."
"What then?"
Henry lowered his voice.
"Someone sent me a video."
"What video?"
He looked at Mark.
"Natalie."
My pulse stopped.
"When?"
"Six months ago."
Mark grabbed him.
"Where is it?"
Henry pulled away.
"Cloud archive."
We opened his laptop.
One video.
Timestamp six months earlier.
A woman sat in darkness.
Only half her face visible.
But the voice...
Natalie.
"Henry."
Mark started crying.
The recording continued.
"Do not tell Mark I'm alive."
Claudia sat down hard.
My chest tightened.
Natalie was alive six months ago.
"Do not tell Richard."
I stared.
"Because the person who tried to kill me still has access to both of them."
Mark whispered:
"Who?"
Natalie continued.
"I survived because the woman in the car was not me."
Everything stopped.
Another woman had died.
"Someone switched vehicles before the crash."
Henry whispered:
"That's all I had."
Not quite.
Natalie leaned closer.
"And if Ethan turns three before I come back, activate Cedar North without me."
That explained everything.
She had planned for him.
"One more thing."
Her voice broke.
"If Claudia ever tells Richard this is her house..."
My skin prickled.
The exact sentence Claudia used tonight.
"...then the conditioning worked."
I looked at my wife.
She stared at the screen.
"What conditioning?"
Natalie answered from six months ago.
"Someone has spent years making Claudia believe the house, Mark's future, and Ethan's trust are hers to protect."
Claudia began crying.
"That isn't true."
Natalie:
"It started with Henry's father."
Samuel whispered:
"Thomas."
"And it continued through the person Claudia trusts most."
I looked around.
Mark.
Me.
Henry.
Elaine.
Then Natalie said:
"Her sister."
Claudia stopped breathing.
Elaine.
Natalie continued:
"Elaine is not hiding from the conspiracy."
A pause.
May you like
"She is part of it."
