Chapter 1 - Stop the Furnace

“Stop the furnace!”
Daniel slammed both hands onto the steel platform brake.
The wheels locked with a violent metallic crack.
The dark wooden coffin jerked to a halt several feet from the cremation chamber, rattling the white flowers arranged around it. Candle flames trembled beneath the chapel’s stone arches.
Two attendants stumbled backward.
Daniel threw himself between the coffin and the dark chamber doorway.
His wife lay inside wearing a white lace maternity dress.
Clara was thirty-two years old.
Seven months pregnant.
And according to everyone in the chapel, dead.
Marcus rushed forward.
“Close it. Now.”
He grabbed the coffin lid and tried to slam it down.
Daniel caught it with both hands.
The polished hinges groaned as the two men fought across Clara’s motionless body.
“Get away from her,” Daniel growled.
Marcus’s face was not filled with grief.
It was filled with panic.
That was when Daniel saw it.
A faint movement beneath the white lace covering Clara’s abdomen.
The fabric rose slightly.
Then settled.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Clara’s sister, Julia, covered her mouth.
Their mother, Helena, dropped her black lace handkerchief onto the floor.
“She is already gone,” Helena said.
Her voice sounded calm.
Her hands did not.
Daniel stared at her.
Then at the nervous family doctor standing near the chapel wall.
Dr. Preston Hale swallowed hard.
Daniel pulled a folded medical directive from his suit and slammed it onto the coffin.
“I decide what happens.”
The attendants stepped away from the controls.
Daniel leaned over Clara and pressed two fingers lightly against her neck.
Nothing.
Then Clara’s hand moved against the white satin lining.
One finger curled.
Barely.
But unmistakably.
Marcus staggered backward into a flower stand.
Helena looked toward the exit.
Dr. Hale began backing toward the chapel door.
Daniel straightened.
One hand remained on the coffin.
The other pointed directly at the doctor.
“What did you inject?”
Dr. Hale froze with his fingers wrapped around the door handle.
Helena turned toward him in terror.
And Daniel realized his wife’s funeral had never been about saying goodbye.
May you like
It had been about destroying evidence.
👉 Dr. Hale knew Clara was not truly dead—but the person who ordered the injection was standing much closer to Daniel than he imagined.
