Chapter 9 - The Longest Night

Clara was taken to the intensive care unit.

Doctors placed her on a ventilator while they reversed the drugs and treated severe dehydration.

The baby showed signs of distress but remained stable.

Daniel sat beside Clara’s bed, still wearing his funeral suit.

White lace had been replaced by a hospital gown.

Her wedding ring remained on her hand.

A neurologist explained that the sedatives had created a deathlike state, but Clara’s heart had continued beating weakly.

“She was never dead,” Daniel said.

“No.”

The word was both a miracle and an accusation.

“How did Hale miss the heartbeat?”

“He may not have checked carefully.”

“He did check.”

The doctor understood.

“He wanted not to find it.”

Daniel looked through the glass wall toward the officers waiting outside Helena’s room of questioning.

Rachel arrived with the original medical directive.

She also brought federal agents.

The recordings Clara made involved stolen foundation funds crossing state lines.

This was no longer only an attempted murder investigation.

It was a large financial conspiracy.

But Daniel did not care about the money that night.

He cared about Clara’s eyes.

He needed them to open.

At 2:40 a.m., her fingers moved again.

Daniel stood.

“Clara?”

Her eyelids fluttered.

A nurse entered.

Clara’s heart rate rose.

“Don’t force her,” the nurse said.

Daniel leaned close.

“You’re safe.”

Clara’s lips moved around the breathing tube.

No sound came.

Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes.

Daniel pressed his forehead against her hand.

“You’re safe. The baby is safe.”

Her entire body relaxed slightly.

Then she tried to raise one hand.

Her fingers formed a weak shape.

A letter.

M.

“Marcus?” Daniel asked.

She shook her head faintly.

“Helen?”

Another tiny shake.

She traced the letter again.

M.

Then pointed weakly toward her abdomen.

The nurse asked everyone to step back.

Clara’s blood pressure was rising.

Daniel left the room.

He could not understand what she meant.

M.

Mother?

Money?

Medical records?

Hours later, Julia arrived carrying Clara’s nursery recorder.

She had listened to the full file recovered by digital technicians.

“There was another person in the room,” Julia said.

“Who?”

She pressed play.

A male voice Daniel recognized immediately spoke after Clara collapsed.

“Make certain the child survives.”

Daniel stared at the recorder.

The voice belonged to Helena’s attorney, Malcolm Voss.

👉 Helena wanted Clara silenced—but Malcolm’s command to save the unborn child revealed that the baby was central to the entire scheme.
