Chapter 11 - The Emergency Decision

Clara’s blood pressure rose dangerously.
The baby’s heart rate began falling.
Doctors diagnosed severe placental distress caused by prolonged oxygen deprivation and the drugs in Clara’s system.
The obstetric surgeon met Daniel outside the operating room.
“We need to deliver now.”
“She’s only seven months.”
“The neonatal team is ready.”
“What happens if you wait?”
“We may lose both of them.”
Daniel felt the corridor tilt beneath him.
Clara’s medical directive gave him authority.
The same document Helena had tried to forge now placed two lives in his hands.
Rachel stood nearby.
Julia held Daniel’s arm.
No one told him what to decide.
He remembered a conversation with Clara months earlier.
They had been assembling the crib.
She had placed one hand over her stomach and said, “If anything goes wrong, save the baby only if saving me isn’t possible. I want our child to have a mother.”
Daniel had laughed nervously.
“Nothing is going wrong.”
“Promise me you heard me.”
He had promised.
Now he repeated Clara’s wishes to the surgeon.
“Save them both. But do not sacrifice her when there is another option.”
The surgical team moved quickly.
Daniel waited under fluorescent lights while the woman he loved and the child he had never met fought in separate operating rooms.
After forty-seven minutes, a nurse appeared.
“Your daughter is alive.”
Daniel covered his face.
“She weighs three pounds, eight ounces. She needs respiratory support, but she is responding.”
“And Clara?”
“The surgeons are still working.”
Two more hours passed.
Finally, the obstetric surgeon returned.
“Clara is stable.”
Daniel could not speak.
“She lost significant blood, but we controlled it. Her recovery will be difficult.”
“Can I see her?”
“Soon.”
Daniel first went to the neonatal intensive care unit.
His daughter lay inside an incubator, impossibly small, with one hand curled near her face.
A nurse asked her name.
Daniel looked through the glass.
Clara had chosen it months earlier.
“Eleanor.”
The name belonged to Daniel’s grandmother, the woman who raised him after his mother died.
He placed one finger through the incubator opening.
The baby’s tiny hand closed around it.
At that exact moment, Detective Mendes called.
Malcolm had agreed to cooperate.
But only if authorities protected him from Helena.
He claimed Helena had not merely ordered Clara’s death.

She had done it before.
👉 Malcolm revealed that another member of the Bennett family had died under nearly identical circumstances sixteen years earlier.
