Chapter 12 - The First Victim
Sixteen years earlier, Helena’s younger sister Rebecca died after collapsing at a family retreat.
Dr. Hale had been present.
The death was attributed to a heart condition.
There was no autopsy.
Rebecca was cremated within twenty-four hours.
At the time, she controlled a large voting block in the Bennett Foundation.
After her death, those shares transferred to Helena.
Malcolm told investigators Rebecca had discovered early signs of financial theft.
She threatened to remove Helena from the board.
Helena responded by asking Dr. Hale for “a medical solution.”
Malcolm claimed he did not know they intended to kill Rebecca until after her death.
But he helped conceal the financial records.
That made him part of the conspiracy.
Rebecca’s remains could not be examined.
Yet old medical files survived.
Dr. Hale had written the same cause of death he later used for Clara.
Sudden embolism.
The same rushed cremation.
The same absence of a hospital.
The same private declaration.
Helena had used a successful murder as the model for Clara’s death.
Daniel listened to the confession from Clara’s hospital room.
Clara was awake but weak.
She could not speak above a whisper.
When Daniel told her about Rebecca, tears filled her eyes.
“Aunt Rebecca tried to warn me,” she said.
“When?”
“When I was sixteen.”
Rebecca told Clara never to trust the foundation’s medical accounts.
At the time, Clara thought her aunt was paranoid.
Three days later, Rebecca died.
Helena spent years teaching Clara that Rebecca had been unstable.
Just as Wyatt had tried to make Leona seem unreliable.
Just as Helena planned to portray Daniel as a grief-stricken husband refusing to accept death.
The conspiracy did not only steal money.
It destroyed the credibility of anyone who threatened it.
Clara closed her eyes.
“I should have believed her.”
“You were a child.”
“She died alone.”
“No,” Daniel said. “She left enough truth for you to find.”
Investigators reopened Rebecca’s case.
Malcolm provided account ledgers, emails, and a recording Helena made years earlier.
In it, she said:
Rebecca’s mistake was believing family meant immunity.
That sentence connected Helena directly to the earlier death.
Marcus learned about Rebecca only after his arrest.
He demanded to speak with Daniel.
Daniel refused.
Then Marcus sent a message through his attorney.
He knew where Helena had hidden the original foundation ledgers.
