Chapter 10 - The Heir Clause

Malcolm Voss had managed the Bennett family trust for thirty years.
He was not present at the funeral.
He had left California the previous night.
Federal agents located him at a private airport outside Phoenix.
In his briefcase, they found a copy of Clara’s grandmother’s will.
The document contained a clause no one had mentioned to Daniel.
Control of the Bennett Foundation would pass to Clara when she turned thirty-five.
Unless she had a biological child first.
In that case, the voting shares would transfer into a protected trust for the child at birth.
Clara was the only person who could manage that trust until the child turned eighteen.
If Clara died before giving birth, control returned temporarily to Helena.
If the baby survived Clara, Helena could petition to become the child’s guardian and trust manager.
Daniel understood immediately.
Helena needed Clara dead.
But she needed the baby alive.
That was why Malcolm ordered Dr. Hale to protect the pregnancy while suppressing Clara’s vital signs.
They planned to remove the baby by emergency surgery after Daniel was persuaded to leave.
But Clara began showing signs of waking sooner than expected.
The conspirators panicked.
Cremation became the fastest way to eliminate both the living witness and the medical evidence.
Marcus wanted to kill both Clara and the baby.
Helena still wanted the child.
Their disagreement created the confusion Daniel saw at the chapel.
Rachel examined the will.
“If Clara survives, Helena loses everything.”
“Everything?”
“Control of the foundation. Access to its accounts. Authority over the family properties.”
The fake vendors had stolen more than eleven million dollars over six years.
Clara had discovered irregularities while reviewing grant applications for a maternity clinic.
She traced invoices to shell companies connected to Marcus.
Dr. Hale certified nonexistent medical services.
Malcolm created the contracts.
Helena approved the payments.
Clara had planned to report all four.
Instead, Helena invited her to the family house under the pretense of reconciliation.
Dr. Hale drugged her tea.
Marcus restrained her when she tried to escape.
Malcolm forged the directive.
Then they called Daniel with the story of a sudden embolism.
The plan had been meticulous.
Except for one thing.
They underestimated Clara.
Before losing consciousness, she activated her watch, messaged Daniel, hid the recorder, and positioned evidence beneath the nursery camera.
Her body had been trapped.
Her mind had kept fighting until the final second.
Daniel returned to Clara’s bedside.
He took her hand.
“They know everything.”
Her eyes remained closed.
“But you have to wake up and tell them yourself.”
Her fingers tightened faintly around his.
May you like
Then the fetal monitor alarm began sounding.
👉 Clara had survived the coffin, but doctors were now forced to choose between continuing the pregnancy and saving her life.
