Chapter 13 - Clara Faces Her Brother
Clara remained in the hospital for three weeks.
Her daughter stayed in the neonatal unit.
Each day, Clara grew stronger.
Each day, new evidence emerged.
When Marcus requested a meeting, Clara agreed.
The conversation took place through secure video.
Marcus appeared in a jail uniform.
The arrogance was gone.
“Clara.”
She looked at him without speaking.
“I didn’t know Mother killed Aunt Rebecca.”
“You knew what she was doing to me.”
“I thought Hale would keep you unconscious.”
“You tried to inject me again.”
Marcus looked down.
“You were waking up.”
“So you decided I had to die?”
“You were going to send us all to prison.”
“You stole from clinics that treated pregnant women.”
“Mother said the money belonged to us.”
“And you believed her?”
“She made me believe the foundation was our inheritance.”
“It was a responsibility.”
Marcus leaned toward the camera.
“I can give you the original ledgers.”
“Give them to the investigators.”
“I need protection.”
“You need consequences.”
His face hardened.
“You always thought you were better than me.”
“No. I believed you were better than this.”
That answer silenced him.
Clara continued.
“You stood beside my coffin and tried to close the lid after you saw my child move.”
Marcus’s eyes filled.
“I panicked.”
“You made a choice.”
He wiped his face.
“The ledgers are inside the chapel altar. There is a removable stone beneath the crucifix.”
Clara said nothing.
“I’m telling you.”
“Not for me.”
“What?”
“You are telling the investigators because it is the truth. You are not buying my forgiveness.”
Marcus looked at his sister.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that the family bond he had exploited no longer protected him.
Police recovered the ledgers that evening.
They documented every false vendor, every stolen grant, and every payment to Dr. Hale.
One entry included the purchase of the drugs used on Clara.
Another connected Helena to Rebecca’s death.
The prosecution no longer depended only on testimony.
It had records written in Helena’s own hand.
The case went before a grand jury.
Helena was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, financial fraud, falsifying medical records, and Rebecca’s murder.
Marcus faced attempted murder and conspiracy charges.
Dr. Hale faced both murder and attempted murder charges.
Malcolm received reduced charges for cooperation but remained accountable.
As Clara watched the indictments from her hospital bed, a nurse entered smiling.
