Chapter 14 - The Woman in the Coffin Speaks
The trial began ten months later.
Clara walked into the courtroom holding Daniel’s hand.
Her body had healed.
Her memory had not.
Helena sat at the defense table wearing a dark suit and pearls.
She did not look at her daughter.
Marcus pleaded guilty before trial and agreed to testify.
Dr. Hale also entered a plea after the medical evidence confirmed the drugs in Clara’s blood.
Helena alone insisted she was innocent.
Her attorney claimed Clara had misunderstood family financial decisions.
He described the injection as an emergency treatment.
He suggested Daniel exaggerated the movement inside the coffin because of grief.
Then Clara testified.
She described drinking tea at Helena’s house.
The numbness in her hands.
Marcus taking her phone.
Dr. Hale injecting her while Helena held her shoulders.
She remembered voices after her body stopped responding.
“I could hear them,” Clara said.
The courtroom became silent.
Helena finally looked at her.
“I heard my mother tell Marcus to remove my wedding ring. I heard Dr. Hale say my pulse was still present. I heard them discuss whether my baby would survive.”
The prosecutor asked, “Could you move?”
“No.”
“Could you speak?”
“No.”
“What did you feel?”
“Terror.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
Clara continued.
“I heard my husband arrive at the chapel. I heard him touch my face. I tried to open my eyes.”
The prosecutor paused.
“Were you conscious when the coffin began moving?”
“Yes.”
A juror covered her mouth.
“I heard the wheels. I heard the chamber doors. I felt the platform move.”
“What happened next?”
“My daughter moved.”
Clara placed one hand over her abdomen.
“The movement gave me enough sensation to move one finger.”
The prosecutor looked toward Helena.
“What did you hear after that?”
“My husband shouting, ‘Stop the furnace.’”
Helena’s face crumpled for the first time.
The defense attempted to portray Clara’s memories as drug-induced confusion.
Then the prosecution played her watch recording.
Marcus’s voice.
Dr. Hale’s dosage instructions.
Helena ordering the cremation before Daniel arrived.
Finally, Malcolm’s recording concerning Rebecca.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
Helena was convicted on every major count.
As officers led her away, she turned toward Clara.
“I gave you everything.”
Clara stood.
“No. You tried to take everything.”
Helena disappeared through the courtroom door.
