Chapter 4 - Clara’s Last Message
At 2:13 a.m., Daniel’s phone connected to the chapel’s Wi-Fi.
A message from Clara finally appeared.
It had been sent the previous afternoon but remained undelivered while Daniel drove through an area with poor reception.
The message contained no greeting.
Only six words.
If anything happens, check the nursery camera.
Daniel’s chest tightened.
The nursery was inside their home twenty minutes away.
He left the chapel through a side entrance without telling Helena.
When he reached the house, the front door was unlocked.
Clara’s purse lay on the floor.
One shoe rested beside the staircase.
The other was missing.
Daniel hurried upstairs.
The nursery looked untouched.
A white crib stood near the window.
Folded baby clothes filled the dresser.
Above the door was a small camera Clara had installed after packages began disappearing from their porch.
Daniel accessed the recordings.
At 4:42 p.m., Clara entered the nursery carrying a brown envelope.
She locked the door.
Then she positioned herself directly beneath the camera and held several pages toward the lens.
The writing was too small to read clearly.
But Daniel recognized bank statements.
Clara spoke softly.
“Daniel, my mother has been moving money from the Bennett Family Foundation.”
The Bennett Foundation was Helena’s public legacy.
It funded maternity clinics, shelters, and college scholarships.
Clara continued.
“Marcus helped her create fake vendors. Dr. Hale signed medical invoices for treatments that never happened.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Clara placed one hand over her abdomen.
“I copied everything. I was going to federal investigators tomorrow.”
A sound came from the hallway.
Clara looked toward the door.
Her face changed.
“Someone’s here.”
The recording shook as she hid the envelope beneath a loose floorboard beside the crib.
The door opened.
Helena entered.
“Why didn’t you answer my calls?”
Clara stood.
“I was busy.”
Helena looked toward the camera.
The recording ended.
Someone had disabled the system remotely.
Daniel dropped to his knees beside the crib.
He lifted the loose floorboard.
The brown envelope was gone.
But Clara had left something else.
A small digital recorder.
He pressed play.
Helena’s voice filled the nursery.
“You will not destroy this family over paperwork.”
Then Clara:
“You stole from pregnant women.”
Marcus entered.
“You’re confused.”
“I have the bank records.”
A third voice spoke.
Dr. Hale.
“Clara, I can give you something to calm down.”
