Chapter 1 - The Moment Grant Came Home

The vase struck Tessa Monroe across the head.
She cried out and crashed sideways into the sofa.
Behind her, twelve-month-old Noah screamed.
Vivienne Cross stood over them, breathing hard, her wine-red dress trembling with every breath.
Seconds earlier, she had kicked Noah across the floor.
Tessa had grabbed the baby and put herself between them.
When Vivienne tried to reach him again, Tessa slapped her.
That was when Vivienne grabbed the vase.
“You’re going to regret this!”
Then she swung.
The vase slipped from her hand and hit the carpet.
Tessa kept one arm over her head and the other stretched protectively toward Noah.
Then—
the front door opened.
Grant Mercer stood there.
No one moved.
His eyes found Noah first.
His son was crying behind the sofa.
Then Tessa.
She was hurt but still shielding the child.
Finally—
Vivienne.
Grant’s jaw tightened.
Vivienne's rage disappeared instantly.
“Grant…”
He said nothing.
That frightened her more.
He crossed the room, lifted Noah carefully, and checked him before turning to Tessa.
“Can you stand?”
“I think so.”
Vivienne stepped closer.
“She attacked me first.”
Tessa stared at her.
“You kicked his son.”
“I barely touched him!”
Grant finally looked at Vivienne.
“Stop talking.”
Two words.
Quiet.
Controlled.
Vivienne froze.
Grant called for medical help.
Then his eyes moved toward the ceiling.
The security camera.
Vivienne followed his gaze.
Her face changed.
“You don't need that.”
Grant looked back at her.
“Why not?”
Silence.
Tessa suddenly remembered something.
“Grant.”
“What?”
“That camera wasn't the only one recording.”
Vivienne's head snapped toward her.
Tessa pointed toward the marble coffee table.
Grant noticed his tablet sitting there.
Its screen was dark.
But earlier that afternoon, he had been video-calling home to check on Noah.
The call had disconnected—or so everyone thought.
Grant picked it up.
A notification indicated the home-monitoring application had remained active.
Vivienne went completely pale.
Grant looked at her.
“What exactly are you afraid it recorded?”
Vivienne backed toward the entryway.
May you like
And for the first time, Grant realized the attack on Noah might not have started that afternoon.
👉 Grant thought he'd walked in on one horrifying explosion of violence—but Vivienne's fear of the recordings suggested his son had been in danger long before he came home.
