Vivienne had a younger sister.
Elena Cross.
Grant had never met her.
Vivienne claimed they were estranged over “family drama.”
The truth was darker.
Five years earlier, Elena's husband died in a construction accident.
Their daughter Sophie received a substantial settlement.
Vivienne moved in to “help.”
Months later, she petitioned for financial guardianship, claiming Elena was unstable.
Jonathan Pierce represented her.

The judge found insufficient evidence against Elena.
Then Elena disappeared from Vivienne's life.
Grant located her through Melissa.

“Is she around your child?”

Grant asked:
“Did she hurt Sophie?”

“Not where I could prove it.”

A camera.
Vivienne hated cameras she couldn't control.
During Elena's guardianship case, a neighbor's doorbell recording contradicted one of Vivienne's claims.
The case collapsed soon afterward.
Grant thought about Vivienne's face when she noticed his security camera.
This wasn't new behavior.
It was a pattern.
Elena sent him copies of old court filings.
One phrase appeared repeatedly:
CHILD EXHIBITS FEARFUL BEHAVIOR AROUND PRIMARY PARENT.
Grant had seen nearly identical wording in the draft concerning Noah.
He called Melissa.
“Compare these documents.”
She did.
Large sections matched.
Jonathan Pierce hadn't merely advised Vivienne.
He was recycling the old strategy.
Then Melissa found a financial connection.
Pierce had received $75,000 six weeks earlier.
The sender:
Cross Consulting LLC.
Vivienne's company.
Grant had invested $300,000 in that company three months earlier.
His stomach dropped.
She was using his money to finance a legal strategy against him.
Then Tessa called.
“Grant, I found something.”
She had been cleaning Noah's playroom when she noticed a stuffed elephant she didn't recognize.
Inside its zippered compartment was a tiny voice recorder.
