Chapter 9 - What “After Grant” Meant
Investigators treated the recording seriously.
So did Grant.
But evidence mattered more than fear.
They searched.
No poison.
No hired attacker.
No physical plot against Grant.
Instead, “after Grant” referred primarily to a corporate succession scenario Pierce had been exploring.
Still disturbing.
But not murder.
Grant was relieved.
And strangely angry at himself for being relieved.
The actual scheme was bad enough.
They didn't need imaginary crimes.
Then forensic accountants found the real danger.
Vivienne had taken out a $3 million life insurance policy on Grant.
Legal?
Potentially.
Grant had signed an insurance package months earlier.
He thought it was supplemental business coverage.
The paperwork had been mixed among legitimate forms.
His signature was real.
The beneficiary structure, however, had later been altered.
Vivienne's trust entity appeared.
Grant stared at Melissa.
“Can she do that?”
“Not lawfully without valid authorization.”
Forensic review showed a digital amendment submitted from Pierce's office.
Now the case included suspected insurance fraud.
Pierce began distancing himself.
He claimed an assistant processed it.
The assistant produced emails showing Pierce personally instructed her.
His story collapsed.
Then Vivienne made her first major mistake.
She contacted Grant directly.
Against legal advice.
Her message:
YOU KNOW TESSA WANTED ME GONE.
Grant didn't respond.
Another:
SHE TURNED YOU AGAINST ME.
Then:
I LOVED NOAH.
Grant finally handed the phone to Melissa.
No reply.
No argument.
Vivienne sent twelve more messages.
The final one:
ASK TESSA WHAT SHE WAS HIDING UNDER THE SOFA.
Grant looked up.
Tessa went pale when he told her.
“What?”
She returned to the house with investigators present.
Beneath the sofa lining was a tiny memory card.
Tessa stared.
“I didn't put that there.”
Forensic analysis showed it belonged to the living-room security system.
Someone had created an offline backup.
The date:
Two weeks before the vase attack.
Why?
The card contained footage Vivienne had deleted from the cloud.
But who made the backup?
The system log showed a local manual export.
User:
T.MONROE.
Grant turned toward Tessa.
She looked stunned.
“I swear I didn't do it.”
