Chapter 5 - The Recorder in Noah’s Playroom
Grant didn't switch the recorder on.
Melissa had it preserved properly.
A forensic technician extracted the files.
Hours of audio.
Grant working late.
Tessa soothing Noah.
Private phone calls.
Arguments between Grant and Vivienne.
Then they found edited versions on a cloud account connected to Jonathan Pierce.
In one original recording, Grant said:
“I can't keep doing this.”
He was talking about working fourteen-hour days.
In the edited version:
“I can't keep doing this… with Noah.”
Another recording captured Grant saying:
“Sometimes I just want to disappear for a week.”
He had been joking about vacation.
The edited version removed the laughter and surrounding conversation.
Melissa looked furious.
“They're constructing a narrative.”
An exhausted father.
Emotionally unavailable.
Potentially unstable.
Then came footage.
Vivienne had secretly recorded Grant after waking him at 2:00 a.m.
She repeatedly accused him of neglecting Noah.
Grant eventually shouted:
“Leave me alone!”
The video ended there.
What it didn't show was Vivienne provoking him for twenty minutes.
Grant felt humiliated.
Then angry.
Then something more useful.
Focused.
He told Melissa:
“Preserve everything.”
That surprised her.
“You're not going to confront Vivienne?”
“No.”
Grant finally understood her strategy.
She wanted reactions.
Anger.
Threats.
Anything she could isolate.
So he stopped giving her material.
Then investigators recovered the living-room security footage from the afternoon of the vase attack.
It showed everything.
Vivienne kicking Noah.
Tessa protecting him.
Vivienne reaching again.
Tessa resisting.
The slap.
The vase.
Grant entering.
No ambiguity.
But the footage contained something else.
Twenty minutes earlier, Vivienne had been alone in the living room.
She made a phone call.
The camera microphone captured her side.
“Grant comes home at six.”
Pause.
“No, Tessa still won't leave.”
Pause.
“I'll handle her.”
Then:
“Once she's gone, nobody can contradict me about Noah.”
Grant stared at Melissa.
“Who was she talking to?”
Phone records answered.
Jonathan Pierce.
And the call continued longer than the camera captured.
Investigators obtained metadata.
Immediately afterward, Pierce emailed a document titled:

EMERGENCY CUSTODY EVIDENCE CHECKLIST.
