Chapter 14 - What Tessa Asked For

Grant expected Tessa to leave.

He wouldn't have blamed her.

She had been assaulted.

Falsely accused of theft.

Threatened.

Nearly framed.

Instead, she returned after recovering.

Not immediately.

Not because Grant asked.

Because she wanted to finish what she started.

Noah smiled when he saw her.

That settled it for her.

Grant increased her salary substantially.

Tessa refused the first number.

“That's ridiculous.”

“You took a vase to the head protecting my son.”

“That's not how compensation works.”

Grant almost laughed.

Eventually they agreed on something fair.

He also paid for her medical expenses and ensured she had independent legal support related to the case.

Then he apologized.

Properly.

Not:

I'm sorry you felt—

Not:

I was busy—

Just:

“I should have listened.”

Tessa nodded.

“Yes.”

Grant blinked.

Then laughed.

“You could soften that.”

“You hired me for honesty.”

“I absolutely did not.”

“You needed it anyway.”

Life became ordinary again.

That was the miracle.

Breakfast.

Toys.

Work.

Bath time.

Noah's first real words.

One was “Dad.”

Another was “Tess.”

Grant pretended not to be jealous.

Tessa enjoyed that enormously.

Claire's trust remained untouched.

When Mercer Development eventually sold, Noah's proceeds went directly into the independently protected structure.

Forty-three million dollars after final valuation.

Vivienne never touched a cent.

Grant changed his own estate plan too.

Independent oversight.

Multiple guardianship safeguards.

No romantic partner automatically gaining financial authority.

Then he made another decision.

He created a foundation supporting caregivers who report suspected child mistreatment and face retaliation.

He named it after Claire.

Tessa cried when he told her.

“That's good.”

Grant looked toward Noah.

“It should've existed already.”

Years passed.

Noah remembered almost nothing about Vivienne.

Grant never forced the story onto him.

When Noah became old enough to ask, Grant answered honestly at an age-appropriate level.

“Someone hurt you.”

“Why?”

“Because she wanted something that wasn't hers.”

“What?”

“Money.”

Noah frowned.

“That's stupid.”

Grant smiled.

“Very.”

Then Noah asked:

“Did you save me?”

Grant looked toward Tessa.

“No.”

Noah seemed confused.

Grant continued:

May you like

“Tessa did first.”

👉 Grant had entered the doorway looking like the hero—but years later he made sure Noah knew who had actually stood between him and danger before anyone else arrived.
