Chapter 11 - Rachel’s First Betrayal
Detective Harris confronted Rachel with Thomas’s video.
She stopped denying everything.
Two years earlier, Thomas told her Linda was stealing from the trust.
Rachel checked the accounts and discovered he was right.
She planned to tell Natalie.
Then Linda offered to fund Rachel’s clinic.
Rachel accepted.
She convinced herself she would repay the money later.
But the clinic kept losing money.
Every payment made silence more expensive.
When Thomas died, Rachel helped Linda create false invoices that made the missing funds look like medical expenses.
Rachel cried as she described it.
“I never wanted Eli hurt.”
Harris answered:
“You locked him in a shed.”
“My mother said it would be ten minutes.”
“You returned three times.”
“I brought water.”
“You left him inside.”
Rachel covered her face.
There was no version of the truth that made her innocent.
Linda still refused to speak.
Her attorney claimed Thomas lacked mental capacity when the recordings were made.
Medical records disproved that claim.
His oncologist confirmed he remained competent until his final days.
The videos were clear.
Thomas understood the trust.
He understood Linda’s theft.
And he understood Rachel’s silence.
In one recording, he looked directly into the camera.
“If Rachel chooses the money, Natalie must know she chose it freely.”
Rachel watched that sentence in the interrogation room.
