Chapter 17 - The Verdict
The jury convicted Linda on every major charge.
Rachel was also convicted, though her eventual cooperation reduced part of her sentence.
Linda received a lengthy prison term because of the combined child abuse, elder exploitation, and financial crimes.
Rachel received fewer years but lost her medical license permanently.
The judge addressed her first.
“You recognized danger and chose participation because honesty threatened your lifestyle.”
Then he turned to Linda.
“You did not lose control in one terrible moment. You made repeated decisions to preserve money, silence witnesses, destroy evidence, and endanger a child.”
Linda remained expressionless until the judge mentioned Eli.
Then she looked toward Natalie.
“You’re taking him away from his family.”
Natalie finally answered.
“No. I’m ending the part of the family that hurt him.”
Linda’s face changed.
For the first time, Natalie spoke without fear, apology, or explanation.
The recovered money returned to Thomas’s trust.
The clinic property was sold.
The vacation home was seized.
The independent trustee created protected accounts for Natalie and Eli.
Natalie used part of her inheritance to move into a safer home near Eli’s school.
She did not buy anything extravagant.
She chose a house with wide windows, a small yard, and no backyard shed.
Eli chose the room closest to hers.
