Chapter 8 - Rachel’s Insurance
Police searched Rachel’s apartment.
Inside a locked desk drawer, they found copies of Linda’s bank statements.
There were transfers from Thomas’s trust into accounts controlled by Linda.
Some money later moved into Rachel’s private clinic.
Rachel had benefited from the theft.
But she had also been collecting evidence against her mother.
A hidden audio recorder was discovered inside Rachel’s handbag.
She used it during conversations with Linda.
Rachel told detectives she feared Linda would blame everything on her if the financial fraud surfaced.
So she created “insurance.”
The black device in Harris’s hand contained recovered audio from that recorder.
One conversation took place the morning Eli was injured.
Linda said:
“The boy saw the video.”
Rachel answered:
“Then tell Natalie before this gets worse.”
Linda replied:
“If Natalie learns about the trust, you lose the clinic.”
Rachel went silent.
Linda knew exactly how to control her.
The clinic was drowning in debt.
Most of its funding came from stolen trust money.
If Rachel exposed Linda, her own career would collapse.
The recording continued.
Linda instructed Rachel to retrieve the memory card.
Rachel asked what would happen if Eli refused.
Linda said:
“Make him afraid enough to remember.”
Rachel had not created the plan.
But she followed it.
She chose her clinic over her nephew.
When Harris played the audio, Rachel began crying.
Linda stared at her with pure hatred.
“You recorded me?”
Rachel whispered:
“I knew you’d sacrifice me.”
