Chapter 16 - Thomas Speaks in Court
Thomas’s final recorded statement was played during trial.
He sat inside his study wearing a blue cardigan.
His voice was weak but clear.
“If Natalie is seeing this, I am sorry I did not protect the trust sooner.”
Natalie began crying quietly.
Thomas explained how Linda diverted funds.
He described Richard Hale, the accountant who helped hide transfers.
He confirmed Rachel knew the truth.
Then he spoke about Eli.
“My grandson believes cameras preserve happy days. I hope he never learns they sometimes preserve truth because people refuse to speak it.”
The courtroom became still.
“I created the trust so Natalie would never have to stay near cruelty for financial survival. If Linda has hidden it, restore it to my daughter. Do not let her believe accepting what belongs to her is betrayal.”
Linda stared straight ahead.
For decades, she had controlled Thomas’s memory.
She told everyone he was confused.
Weak.
Dependent on her.
Now his own voice contradicted her.
The recording ended with Thomas smiling faintly.
“Nat, you were never difficult. You were the only one asking honest questions.”
Natalie covered her face.
Those were the words she had needed her entire life.
Linda finally looked at her daughter.
Natalie did not look back.
Thomas had reached across death to free her from the story Linda built.
