Chapter 6 - The Shed

Eli could only describe the incident in fragments.
Rachel took him into the backyard after lunch.
She asked where he had hidden the memory card.
He said he did not know.
Linda arrived carrying the plastic dinosaur.
She showed him that it had been cut open.
Then she told him lying was dangerous.
Rachel led him toward the shed.
Eli thought they were going to find a garden toy.
Instead, Rachel pushed him inside.
Linda stood at the door.
“She said I could come out when I told.”
Natalie covered her mouth.
The shed had no air-conditioning.
Dallas temperatures had climbed above one hundred degrees that afternoon.
Eli pounded on the door until his hands bled beneath the skin.
He tried to force the latch.
That explained the wrist injury.
He cried for his mother.
No one opened the door.
Rachel returned once with water.
But she did not release him.
She asked again about the card.
Eli said he called her a monster.
Detective Harris looked toward Rachel.
She shook her head.
“He is confused.”
The heart monitor accelerated.
Eli pointed harder.
“Blue monster.”
Rachel looked down at her blue medical top.
Linda stepped in front of her.
“He means a cartoon.”
Harris raised the black evidence device again.
“You were recorded entering the shed area three times.”
Rachel’s breathing stopped.

The hallway camera was not the camera she feared.
Something else had watched the backyard.
