Chapter 1 - The Whisper Behind The Chains

The heavy prison door slammed open, and I ran toward the only person in the world who still called me Daddy.

The chains around my wrists and ankles stopped me before I could reach her.

“Chloe…”

My voice broke the moment I saw her.

Eight years old.

Pink dress.

Same bright eyes she had when I held her for the first time.

But now she was standing in a Texas prison visitation room, surrounded by concrete walls, correctional officers, and the man who controlled every second of my life.

Warden Mitchell watched from across the room.

Cold.

Silent.

Waiting.

Then Chloe ran.

The guards moved slightly, but nobody stopped her.

She reached me, and I dropped to my knees as far as my chains allowed.

“Daddy…”

Her tiny arms wrapped around me.

I held her tighter than I ever had before.

Because deep inside, I believed this might be the last time.

My execution date was getting closer.

Everyone had already decided who I was.

A murderer.

A monster.

A man who deserved to disappear.

But Chloe never looked at me like that.

She pulled away slightly and looked around the room.

Then she leaned toward my ear.

“Daddy… I know who really did it.”

My breathing stopped.

The pain in my chest disappeared.

Replaced by something I hadn’t felt in years.

Hope.

I slowly lifted my head.

Across the room, my eyes met Warden Mitchell’s.

He noticed my expression change.

His confident face tightened.

He stepped forward.

“What did she say?”

Nobody answered.

Chloe calmly reached into her pink dress pocket.

Her fingers closed around a folded piece of paper.

A small piece of paper that suddenly felt heavier than my entire prison sentence.

The guards exchanged nervous looks.
