Chapter 3 - The Name Written Inside

I wanted to open the paper immediately.

I wanted answers.

But Chloe held my hand.

“Not yet.”

Those two words shocked me.

Not because she refused.

Because she sounded afraid.

A child should never sound afraid in a prison visitation room.

“What happened, Chloe?”

She looked at the floor.

“I found it in Grandma’s room.”

“Found what?”

“The box.”

My mind raced.

My mother had a locked wooden box.

I remembered seeing it years ago.

Before my arrest.

Before everything changed.

Chloe continued.

“There were pictures.”

“What pictures?”

She swallowed.

“Pictures of you.”

I felt my heartbeat increase.

The warden moved closer.

“Time is almost over.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

The officer beside him shifted.

The warden wasn’t watching me.

He was watching the paper.

That was the first time I knew.

Whatever Chloe had found wasn’t just important.

It was dangerous.

Then she finally unfolded one corner.

I saw a name.

A name I recognized.
