Chapter 4 - The Warden’s Secret Connection

I couldn’t stop staring.
The same man who controlled my prison life was connected to the evidence that could clear me.
Warden Mitchell noticed.
His expression hardened.
“Give me the paper.”
Chloe pulled it closer.
“No.”
The room went silent.
Everyone expected me to be the dangerous one.
The inmate.
The convicted killer.
But the person refusing to obey was an eight-year-old girl.
The warden stepped forward.
“Little girl, you don’t understand what you have.”
I moved between them as much as my chains allowed.
“Don’t talk to her like that.”
For the first time in years, I wasn’t afraid of authority.
Not because I was brave.
Because someone finally gave me a reason to fight.
The warden backed away.
But before leaving, he said something quietly.
“You should ask your daughter why she was brought here today.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it sounded like a warning.
Not a threat.

A warning that someone else was involved.
