Chapter 1 - The Shed Behind The House

“That old man belongs in the shed!”

My mother’s words stopped me in the middle of the luxury kitchen.

For a second, I thought I heard her wrong.

Diane stood beside the marble counter, calmly pouring coffee while rain tapped against the windows.

My grandfather.

Henry.

Eighty-eight years old.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who held my hand at my father’s funeral.

She was talking about him like he was an unwanted object.

I pushed my chair back so hard it scraped across the floor.

“What did you say?”

My mother looked at me.

Not guilty.

Not ashamed.

Annoyed.

“Don’t start, Claire.”

That sentence told me everything.

I walked toward the back door.

Behind me, my father Michael raised his voice.

“Claire, stop.”

I didn’t.

Because I already knew.

For weeks, they told me Grandpa was staying in a private care facility.

For weeks, they told me he was comfortable.

For weeks, I believed them.

Until that moment.

The backyard was soaked from the rain.

And behind the house stood a small wooden shed.

A place I had never been allowed near.

The lock was new.

Heavy.

Intentional.

My hands tightened.

I pulled out the tactical pry tool I carried for emergencies.

The metal snapped against the padlock.

Once.

Twice.

Then the lock broke.

I kicked the door open.

The smell hit me first.

Cold air.

Damp wood.

And something worse.

Neglect.

“Grandpa?”

A weak movement came from the corner.

Henry was sitting on the floor.

Thin.

Exhausted.

Wrapped in an old blanket.

His eyes widened when he saw me.

“Claire?”

I dropped beside him.

I took off my coat and wrapped it around his shaking body.

His fingers grabbed my arm.

“They said…”

His voice was barely there.

“They said you abandoned me…”

My heart broke.

Because my grandfather wasn’t just locked away.

He had been made to believe everyone forgot him.

Then footsteps thundered behind me.

My father.

Michael.

He rushed toward the shed.

“Get back inside!”

His hand reached for my shoulder.

I blocked him immediately.

And for the first time in my life, I looked at my father like a stranger.

Without taking my eyes off Grandpa, I pressed a hidden button on my phone.

“Move in.”

A pause.

Then I whispered:

“Dangerous suspects on site.”

Outside the shed, my family heard something approaching.

The rain couldn’t hide it anymore.

A distant rumble.

Michael’s face changed.

Diane stopped smiling.

And Brandon’s confidence disappeared.

Because they finally realized.

They were not in control anymore.
