I helped Grandpa into the house.
Not because they deserved to have him back inside.
Because he deserved warmth.
The entire family watched silently.
Michael looked angry.
Not guilty.

That bothered me.

But people who believe they are entitled become furious.
I sat Grandpa at the kitchen table.
The same table where we celebrated birthdays.
The same table where my family smiled for photos.
Now it felt like a courtroom.
“Tell Claire the truth,” I said.
Michael stepped forward.
“Dad is confused.”
Grandpa looked at him.
And for a moment, I saw something.
Fear.
My grandfather was afraid of his own son.

“What truth?” I asked.
Grandpa’s hands trembled.
“Your father wanted my house.”
Silence.
Michael’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Diane immediately interrupted.
“That’s ridiculous.”
Grandpa continued.
“He said I couldn’t manage my own decisions anymore.”
I stared at Michael.
“You put him in that shed because of property?”
Michael looked away.
Then Brandon spoke.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
That sentence exposed him.
