Chapter 2 - The Emergency Call They Never Expected

The sound in the distance grew louder.

Michael looked toward the driveway.

Then back at me.

“What did you do?”

I ignored him.

My only focus was Grandpa.

His hands were freezing.

His clothes were too thin.

His body looked smaller than I remembered.

“Grandpa, how long?”

He looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

Because he was protecting them.

Even after everything.

“Henry.”

My voice softened.

“Tell me.”

He swallowed.

“Three months.”

Three months.

I felt the number hit me harder than the rain.

Three months of lies.

Three months of my family pretending everything was fine.

Diane stepped forward.

“You’re overreacting.”

I looked at her.

“Overreacting?”

I pointed at the shed.

“Is this what you call care?”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time, she had no explanation.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Captain Whitmore.

“Units are approaching. Keep everyone separated.”

I looked at my family.

They heard the change in my tone.

They knew someone was coming.

Brandon stepped forward.

“You don’t understand what happened.”

I stared at him.

“Then explain.”

He couldn’t.

Because excuses sound different when the victim is standing right there.

Grandpa squeezed my hand.

“Claire…”

I leaned closer.

“Who locked the door?”

His eyes moved toward the house.

Toward my father.

And that small movement told me everything.
