Chapter 10 - The Woman Before Madison
Her name was Elise Vale.
Ryan had told Madison the engagement ended because Elise was “obsessed with money.”
According to him, she demanded ownership in everything he built.
Madison had believed him.
Now Elise’s name appeared as the drafting attorney on the property trust.
Daniel asked Madison whether she knew her.
“Only what Ryan told me.”
Ryan interrupted.
“She prepared standard documents.”
“Then why hide them until the wedding?” Daniel asked.
Ryan looked away.
The police collected the pages as evidence.
The next morning, Daniel contacted an independent attorney named Rebecca Sloan.
Rebecca reviewed the documents and immediately found irregularities.
The trust granted Ryan sole management power.
Madison could transfer assets into it but could not remove them without approval from two Mercer-appointed trustees.
Those trustees were Gloria and Elise.
Madison’s name did not appear among the decision-makers.
Rebecca looked across the conference table.
“This was not a marital trust.”
“What was it?” Nora asked.
“A controlled holding structure.”
Madison swallowed.
“If I had signed?”
“You would have transferred your apartment and commercial property into an entity controlled by Ryan’s family.”
“Could I get them back?”
“Eventually, perhaps. But if the company entered bankruptcy first, your assets might have been used to satisfy Mercer obligations.”
Daniel’s expression remained unreadable.
Rebecca continued.
“This arrangement took months to prepare. Ryan’s relationship with you may have been genuine at some stage, but the financial plan was deliberate.”
Madison looked down at the ring still on her finger.
She had escaped before signing.
