Chapter 13 - The Cousins Speak
Ryan’s cousins were identified as Colin and Matthew Mercer.
Both initially claimed they were only helping calm Madison.
Security footage from the hotel showed otherwise.
They entered the service hallway twenty minutes before the private signing.
Colin carried a roll of medical tape.
Matthew carried Madison’s suitcase.
They had prepared to restrain her and remove her belongings if necessary.
When confronted with the footage, Matthew broke first.
He admitted Gloria told them Madison might become “hysterical.”
“She said Ryan needed the signatures before midnight.”
“Why midnight?” Rebecca asked.
Matthew looked toward his attorney.
Then answered.
“A creditor hearing was scheduled for Monday morning.”
The wedding was Saturday night.
If Madison’s property entered the trust before midnight, Mercer Crest Holdings planned to disclose the assets as new collateral Monday.
The transfer could delay insolvency.
Colin admitted Gloria promised both men repayment of personal loans once the trust was funded.
Neither man expected Madison to fight.
Neither expected her to escape.
Matthew described Ryan’s instructions.
“Hold her arms. Don’t leave marks where photographs will show.”
Madison left the room and vomited in the courthouse bathroom.
Nora held her hair back.
Daniel remained outside the door.
He wanted to break Ryan with his own hands.
Instead, he stood still.
Discipline was not the absence of rage.
It was choosing where rage would go.
