Chapter 14 - Gloria’s Real Power
Ryan had been the groom.
But Gloria was the architect.
She had controlled the Mercer family since her husband’s death.
Every business decision passed through her.
Every relationship was evaluated for usefulness.
Ryan grew up believing affection was something people earned by contributing to the family.
When he failed in business, Gloria did not comfort him.
She told him to recover the family’s position.
Madison became that recovery plan.
Gloria was charged with conspiracy, attempted coercion, and participation in the assault.
Still, she showed no remorse.
During questioning, she described Madison as “an adult woman who became dramatic.”
Rebecca asked why the trust documents removed Madison’s control.
“Because she lacked financial sophistication.”
“She owned two successful properties.”
“Through inheritance.”
“She built a profitable design company.”
“With advantages.”
“Why not ask for a legitimate investment?”
Gloria’s eyes hardened.
“Because she would have refused.”
There it was.
Not misunderstanding.
Not tradition.
Intent.
Gloria knew Madison would say no.
The entire wedding-night operation existed to eliminate that refusal.
When asked whether she believed marriage gave Ryan authority over Madison’s property, Gloria answered calmly.
“A wife joins her husband’s future.”
Rebecca leaned forward.
“Does the husband join hers?”
Gloria did not answer.
Madison watched the recording later.
For years, she had thought cruelty always looked uncontrolled.
