Chapter 12 - Ryan’s First Test

As Rebecca examined Ryan’s emails, a pattern emerged.

Ryan had tested Madison repeatedly before proposing.

The first test came six months into their relationship.

He claimed a business partner had frozen an account and asked to borrow twenty thousand dollars.

Madison offered to help but insisted on a written loan agreement.

Ryan withdrew the request.

Later, he praised her “financial discipline.”

The second test involved her apartment.

He suggested adding his name to the deed so he could coordinate renovations.

Madison declined.

He laughed and called it a romantic idea.

The third test came when Gloria asked how Madison’s grandmother’s estate had been structured.

Madison thought she was making conversation.

In reality, Gloria was gathering information.

Ryan adapted after every boundary.

He became more patient.

More affectionate.

More involved with Nora.

He brought Daniel expensive whiskey and asked about Army leadership.

He made himself indispensable.

By the time he proposed, Madison no longer saw the questions as financial reconnaissance.

She saw them as love.

Daniel read the emails in silence.

One message from Ryan to Gloria stood out.

She won’t transfer anything before marriage. We’ll need emotional pressure after the ceremony.

Gloria replied:

Then make the wedding too public to abandon.

That explained the extravagant ballroom.

The hundreds of guests.

The press photographer.

The social pressure.

They wanted Madison to believe refusing the documents would destroy the happiest day of her life.

When that failed, they used force.

Ryan’s violence had not been an accident.

It was the final stage of a plan.
