Chapter 2 - Four Hours Earlier

Four hours earlier, Madison had believed she was living the happiest day of her life.
She stood beneath white roses in a luxury Dallas ballroom while Ryan slipped a gold ring onto her finger.
He looked perfect.
Calm.
Devoted.
The same man who had spent two years earning her trust.
He had visited Nora after her surgery.
Listened respectfully whenever Daniel spoke about military service.
Remembered every anniversary.
Supported Madison when she opened her interior-design studio.
At the reception, Gloria embraced her.
“You’re finally one of us.”
Madison noticed something unsettling in the way Gloria said it.
Not welcoming.
Possessive.
Ryan guided her toward a private lounge near the bridal suite.
“There’s one small thing we need to handle before we leave.”
Gloria placed a leather folder on the table.
Madison smiled uncertainly.
“Paperwork on our wedding night?”
“Family protection,” Gloria said. “It’s standard.”
Madison opened the folder.
The first page transferred her apartment into a marital trust.
The second gave Ryan management authority over several investment accounts.
A third document referred to her late grandmother’s property.
Madison looked at Ryan.
“Why wasn’t this shown to my attorney?”
Ryan’s expression stayed warm.
“Because it’s routine.”
“I still want someone to review it.”
Gloria’s smile vanished.
“We have two hundred guests downstairs.”
“What does that have to do with my apartment?”
Ryan moved closer.
“Madison, don’t embarrass me.”
She closed the folder.
“I’m not signing anything tonight.”
The room became silent.
Ryan’s hand tightened around his champagne glass.
Gloria looked toward the closed door.

That was when Madison realized they had expected resistance.
And had planned for it.
