Chapter 6 - What Daniel Saw
Daniel had been attending a military awards dinner across the city.
Nora’s message contained only six words.
Come now. Ryan hurt your daughter.
Daniel left before the final presentation.
His government driver took him directly to Nora’s building.
He entered through the secured parking entrance because the lobby was already blocked by wedding guests searching for Madison.
Daniel expected bruising from one struggle.
He expected panic.
He did not expect to find finger-shaped marks covering both of Madison’s upper arms.
He did not expect torn lace where someone had tried to hold her.
He did not expect her to flinch when he lifted his hands.
That reaction nearly destroyed him.
Daniel lowered his palms immediately.
“It’s me.”
Madison looked at him.
“Dad.”
He had not heard her say the word with that much need since she was a child.
Daniel crouched in front of her.
“You don’t have to explain everything now.”
“He knew,” Madison whispered.
“Ryan?”
She nodded.
“His mother brought papers. His cousins held me. He stood there and told me to sign.”
Nora pressed a cold cloth against Madison’s lip.
“What papers?”
“My apartment. My investments. Grandma’s house.”
Daniel’s face became still.
He knew that expression from combat briefings.
It appeared when emotion became too dangerous to display.
Then Ryan began pounding on the door.
Daniel listened to every word.
She belongs with me.
She signs tonight.
He did not move until the door opened and the papers fell.
One page was enough.
