Chapter 2 - THE PRIVATE HOSPITAL

I asked Margaret the same question three times.
“Where is Laura?”
She answered none of them.
Instead, she warned me that the nurse had shown me a falsified file and that dangerous people were using the children to manipulate me.
It was the same structure my mother always used.
Create fear.
Offer herself as the only safe person.
Demand obedience before explanation.
I ended the call.
Detective Lena Hayes arrived at the emergency department ten minutes later. She had handled Laura’s disappearance from the beginning and never accepted the theory that Laura simply ran away.
I showed her the intake form and letter.
Hayes immediately requested the private hospital’s address.
The nurse hesitated.
“It’s called Greenvale Recovery Center.”
Hayes recognized the name.
Greenvale specialized in long-term psychiatric care. Its records were sealed through a private court.
The presiding judge was Samuel Vale.
Margaret’s brother.
My uncle.
Every road led back to my family.
Hayes sent officers to the abandoned house while I remained with Ethan and waited for news about Emma.
They opened the red basement door with the brass key.
Inside was an empty room.
A hospital bed stood beneath one bare bulb.
Leather restraints hung from the rails.
Fresh blood marked the pillow.
Someone had been there minutes earlier.
On the wall, written in black marker, were four words:
DAVID BELIEVES HIS MOTHER.
Hayes ordered officers to Greenvale.
The facility director denied having a patient named Laura Carter or Sarah Mitchell.
Then the hospital nurse showed Hayes the digital transfer code on Laura’s intake sheet.
It came from Greenvale.
Police obtained an emergency warrant.
The director stopped answering calls.
An hour later, agents entered the facility.
Laura’s room was empty.
The bed remained warm.
A feeding tube lay on the floor.
Someone had moved her after Margaret called me.
But the search uncovered something else.
Thirty-two women lived inside Greenvale under false names.
Several had been declared missing by their families.
Each guardianship order had been signed by Judge Vale.
Laura had not been hidden alone.
She was part of a system.
Then Ethan whispered that he remembered a truck beneath the abandoned house.
He had heard its engine behind the basement wall.
The house connected to an underground garage.
A vehicle had removed Laura while we rushed Emma to the hospital.
Hayes checked traffic cameras.
A black medical transport van left the neighborhood nine minutes after us.
Its registration belonged to a charity called Carter Family Wellness.
My mother was its president.
The van’s tracker showed it heading north.
Then the signal disappeared.
A message arrived from Laura’s phone number.
A photograph showed her unconscious inside the van.
Beside her sat the silver-haired woman from the hospital entrance.
The caption read:
ASK DAVID WHO SIGNED THE FIRST GUARDIANSHIP ORDER.
Hayes looked at me.
I already knew the answer.

I had signed it.
