Chapter 5 - THE CHILDREN WITHOUT NAMES
Eleanor Carter created Carter Family Wellness as a private maternity charity.
Behind the public programs was an identity network.
Women judged inconvenient or unstable lost guardianship through Samuel Vale’s court.
Their children received new birth certificates.
Some went to wealthy families.
Others remained inside Carter institutions for medical studies and family control.
Laura found the ledger while reviewing Margaret’s charitable accounts during our divorce.
Twenty-seven children were listed.
Six mothers were declared dead.
Fourteen remained inside institutions.
Seven had vanished into sealed adoptions.
Ethan and Emma’s names appeared near the bottom.
Their transfer was scheduled three days after Laura disappeared.
Margaret intended to take my children too.
Laura copied the ledger.
Then Daniel caught her inside Margaret’s office.
Instead of reporting her immediately, he gave her one hour to escape.
Margaret discovered the theft anyway.
The accident scene beside the highway was staged.
Laura was sedated, removed from the car, and taken to Greenvale.
Daniel helped because Margaret promised the children would remain with me.
She lied.
When Laura learned Margaret still planned to take them, she began pretending the drugs kept her unconscious.
She listened.
Waited.
Then escaped long enough to reach the abandoned house where Ethan and Emma were held before transfer.
She freed Ethan.
She hid the key with Emma.
She stayed behind because the children could move faster without her.
The children had saved each other because their mother chose not to run first.
Hayes traced the silver-haired Eleanor through a private medical plane.
The plane landed at a mountain facility in Colorado.
Federal teams prepared a raid.
Before they reached it, Margaret arrived at the hospital voluntarily.
She wore a navy coat and carried Laura’s original ledger.
“I want protection from my mother.”
I wanted to hate her with certainty.
Instead, I saw fear.
Real fear.
Margaret claimed Eleanor planned to eliminate everyone connected to Greenvale, including her.
“Why should we believe you?” Hayes asked.
Margaret opened the ledger.
A page listed Margaret Carter as Patient 1.
Her mother had started the program with her own daughter.
Margaret grew from victim into administrator.
Understanding did not equal forgiveness.
But it explained the terror.
She offered access codes to Eleanor’s facility.
In exchange, she wanted reduced charges and protective custody.
Rebecca accepted only cooperation.
Then Margaret looked at Ethan.
“He must not go near Eleanor.”
“Why?”
“She believes he is the successful one.”
“Successful what?”
