Chapter 9 - THE COURTHOUSE
Eleanor ordered federal agents to leave the building.
Richard refused.
Margaret appeared through a secure police feed and called her mother a coward.
Daniel provided the bomb squad with old courthouse plans.
Every member of the family knew one part of the structure.
Together, their secrets might save Laura.
The detonator signal traveled through Vale Security’s private network.
Madison, still under questioning, remembered Margaret’s emergency password.
It was the date Daniel was declared dead at birth.
The code disabled one relay.
Not the explosives.
Daniel guided technicians to a second control panel hidden in the judge’s bench.
Richard kept his gun on Laura.
“You see?” he told her. “The family needs people like me.”
Laura looked at him.
“The family needs consequences.”
She drove her elbow into his ribs.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Agents entered.
Hayes pulled Laura behind the bench.
Richard was arrested.
The bomb squad disconnected the final charge with fourteen seconds remaining.
Eleanor escaped again.
But the courthouse archive survived.
It contained original birth records, guardianship orders, medical files, and recordings dating back forty years.
Enough to expose the network.
Laura was transported to the hospital.
I waited outside her room with the children.
When the door opened, she looked at me for a long time.
Fourteen months stood between us.
I did not touch her until she held out her hand.
“I thought you signed me away.”
“I did sign.”
Her fingers withdrew slightly.
“I didn’t know what it was.”
“I know now.”
“I should have believed you.”
“You should have questioned your mother.”
“Yes.”
There was no quick forgiveness.
Only truth.
Ethan entered first.
Laura held him and whispered that he had not abandoned her.
Emma followed.
Grace remained with her advocate and watched through the doorway.
Laura did not call her closer.
She said, “My name is Laura. You can decide when you want to know me.”
Grace nodded.
That was enough.
Then Dr. Reed reviewed Laura’s examinations.
She had undergone repeated procedures at Greenvale.
One occurred weeks before her escape.
The clinic implanted an embryo without her consent.
Laura was pregnant.
Twelve weeks.
The biological material came from embryos stolen during our fertility treatment.
The child was genetically ours.
Eleanor had created another Carter baby while holding Laura captive.
And the hospital file identified the pregnancy as Patient Replacement 4.
