Chapter 6 - ETHAN’S MEMORY

Ethan remembered more in fragments.

A red basement door.

Laura tied to a hospital bed.

Emma crying on a mattress.

Daniel arguing with Margaret.

The silver-haired Eleanor watching through a camera.

Ethan said Eleanor asked him questions about the night Laura disappeared.

He answered correctly even after she gave him medicine.

The drugs failed to erase his memory.

That made him valuable.

Carter researchers had spent decades studying how trauma, medication, and suggestion altered childhood memory.

Children were not only moved through the system.

They were tested.

Ethan resisted.

Emma did not.

She forgot hours at a time.

Laura realized the difference and told Ethan to pretend he had forgotten too.

He did.

For months.

Then he heard staff discussing a permanent procedure for Emma.

That was when Laura acted.

Ethan helped remove Emma’s restraints.

Daniel unlocked the garage.

Laura stayed behind to delay the adults.

Ethan guided his sister home using street signs Laura forced him to memorize.

My six-year-old son had crossed three neighborhoods carrying the weight of saving everyone.

I told him he was brave.

He shook his head.

“I was scared.”

“Brave people are scared.”

“Did Mom know I’d make it?”

“She trusted you.”

He began crying.

“I left her.”

I held him.

“You followed her plan.”

The distinction mattered.

Federal agents entered Eleanor’s Colorado facility using Margaret’s codes.

They found treatment rooms, children’s files, and a chapel converted into a courtroom.

Private guardianship hearings occurred inside the same building where patients were drugged.

Eleanor was gone.

Laura had been moved again.

A hidden camera showed her waking during transport and stealing a nurse’s badge.

She left a message in the elevator log:

DAVID, THE CHILDREN’S BIRTH CERTIFICATES ARE FALSE.

DNA testing confirmed Ethan and Emma were mine and Laura’s.

But their recorded birth dates were wrong.

Ethan was born six months earlier than I remembered.

Emma’s birth file showed another infant delivered the same day.

Twin female.

I was told Emma had been the only baby.

Laura and I had a second daughter.

Margaret took her at birth.

The child was now three.

Her name was Grace.

Eleanor had kept her.

Laura was not simply being moved as a prisoner.
