Chapter 7 - GRACE

Laura discovered Grace’s birth record one month before filing for divorce.
She did not tell me because she believed Margaret monitored my phone and company email.
She was right.
Laura quietly contacted a family-rights attorney and ordered DNA testing through an independent laboratory.
The result confirmed Grace was ours.
The child lived under the name Lily Vale at a private estate owned by Eleanor.
Laura intended to petition federal court.
Then Daniel entered our home wearing my face and warned her to stop.
She thought I had betrayed her.
That was why she filed for divorce immediately.
She needed legal distance and a secure channel.
Before she could explain, Margaret staged her disappearance.
Every misunderstanding in our final months had been engineered.
I remembered Laura looking at me across the kitchen and saying, “I don’t know who you are anymore.”
She had meant it literally.
Daniel had made her question which twin stood before her.
The realization hurt more than anger.
Rebecca obtained Grace’s school photograph.
She looked like Emma with darker hair.
The school withdrew her after federal agents raided Colorado.
Eleanor traveled with Grace and Laura toward the Canadian border.
Border systems showed no legal crossing.
Margaret believed Eleanor used old medical tunnels beneath a former tuberculosis hospital in Montana.
Agents entered.
They found Grace hiding inside a patient room.
She was alone.
A note from Laura lay beneath her pillow.
Please tell David I found her before they found me.
Grace did not know us.
She called Eleanor Nana and Laura “the sick lady.”
Child advocates removed her carefully.
She resisted.
Biology did not erase attachment.
I requested no immediate custody.
Only safety and gradual contact.
Then Grace told investigators that Laura left through the basement with a man who looked like me.
Daniel was in custody.
Another man shared our face.
Margaret admitted my father had an identical twin.
Richard Carter.
He helped Eleanor build Greenvale and disappeared after my father’s death.
The family had used resemblance for generations.
Daniel replaced me.
Richard replaced my father.
Identity itself had become a weapon.
Security video confirmed Richard escorted Laura away willingly.
She did not appear restrained.
Maybe she trusted him.
Maybe she pretended.
Then Richard called me.
“Laura is alive.”
“Let me speak to her.”
“She doesn’t trust your voice.”
My throat tightened.
“What does she want?”
“She wants you to answer one question.”
A pause.
“What did she whisper before Ethan was born?”
Only Laura and I knew.
She had gripped my hand and said, “Whatever happens, our children get the truth.”
I repeated it.
Silence followed.
Then Laura’s weak voice came through the phone.
“David?”
I nearly collapsed.
“I’m here.”
She began crying.

Before she could reveal her location, Richard ended the call.
