Chapter 8 - THE UNCLE WHO CLAIMED TO HELP

Richard said he rescued Laura from Eleanor’s convoy.

He brought her to a private cabin because police departments had Vale connections.

He did not trust Detective Hayes.

Hayes voluntarily submitted her family and financial records for review.

No connection appeared.

Richard still refused to surrender Laura.

He wanted the Carter ledger in exchange for her safety.

He was not rescuing her.

He was negotiating with her life.

Laura contacted me again using a hidden phone.

She whispered that Richard possessed the second half of Eleanor’s archives.

He wanted to take control of the child-placement network rather than destroy it.

He described himself as a reformer.

No forced confinement.

No false deaths.

Only “careful family correction.”

Different language.

Same ownership.

Laura pretended to cooperate so she could locate missing children.

She had found Grace because Richard needed her trust.

Now she needed time to copy his records.

“Tell Hayes not to raid yet,” she said.

“I’m not letting you remain there.”

“I’m not asking permission to stay. I’m telling you what will happen if they rush in.”

That was Laura.

Not broken.

Not waiting to be rescued.

Acting within terrible limits.

Hayes delayed direct entry but surrounded the region.

Laura sent encrypted files.

They identified twelve active safe houses and nine corrupt officials.

Federal arrests began quietly.

Richard realized someone was leaking information.

He moved Laura before agents entered.

But he left behind a recorded message.

“David, your wife chose the investigation over returning to the children.”

The manipulation was obvious.

It still hurt.

Then Laura’s next file arrived automatically.

A video showed her confronting him.

“I choose my children by ending this.”

Richard replied, “They need a living mother.”

“They need a world where you cannot take them again.”

Laura had anticipated his lie and recorded the answer.

The final file revealed Richard’s destination.

Carter County Courthouse.

Judge Vale’s original chambers contained a sealed archive beneath the bench.

Richard planned to destroy evidence linking him to Greenvale.

Federal agents surrounded the courthouse.

Inside, Richard held Laura at gunpoint beside the archive.

He demanded Margaret, Daniel, and Eleanor be brought to him.

He wanted the entire family gathered.

Then the courthouse cameras activated.

Eleanor appeared on every screen.

She held a remote detonator.

“You all mistake yourselves for heirs,” she said.

“The Carter system belongs to me.”

Explosives had been placed beneath the archive.
