Chapter 1 - The Hand Over His Mouth

Vincent Torino had survived three assassination attempts, two federal investigations and twenty-seven years of men lying to his face.
He still never saw the maid coming.
The instant he stepped into his master bedroom, Elena exploded from the darkness.
One hand clamped over his mouth.
The other hooked around his shoulder and yanked him backward into the walk-in closet.
Vincent’s body crashed into a row of tailored suits.
Wooden hangers struck together.
The closet door slammed almost shut, leaving only a narrow blade of warm bedroom light between them.
Vincent reached inside his jacket.
Elena caught his wrist.
Her whole body trembled.
Her eyes did not.
“Don’t make a sound.”
Vincent stared at the thirty-year-old woman in the orange housekeeping uniform.
She had cleaned his home for eleven months.
She had never raised her voice.
Never entered a room without knocking.
Now she had dragged the most feared man in Cleveland into a closet and was holding him in place as though his survival depended on her.
Footsteps entered the bedroom.
Three men.
Soft soles.
Controlled breathing.
Suppressed pistols.
Then Marcus Torino walked in behind them.
Vincent stopped resisting.
Marcus was his younger brother.
His second-in-command.
The man trusted with every code, every route and every name that could destroy the Torino organization.
One intruder searched the bedside drawers.
Another moved toward the oil painting above the credenza.
Marcus scanned the room.
“He should be here.”
Vincent’s pupils narrowed.
Elena kept one hand over his mouth.
The painting was pulled aside.
The hidden wall safe appeared.
Marcus looked toward the closet.
Then he smiled.
“He’s here.”
The handle shifted.
Elena pressed a compact pistol into Vincent’s palm.
Without turning her head, she leaned close enough for her breath to touch his ear.
“He sold you.”
Vincent raised the weapon beneath his jacket.
Marcus’s fingers began turning the handle.
Elena removed her hand from Vincent’s mouth.
Then she whispered the sentence that changed the entire meaning of the ambush.

“It’s not about the money.”
👉 Marcus had not come to steal Vincent’s fortune—he had come for something hidden behind the safe.
