Chapter 2 - The Door That Did Not Open

The closet handle turned halfway.
Vincent aimed directly at the narrow opening.
Elena placed two fingers against his wrist.
Not to stop him.
To lower the barrel by less than an inch.
Marcus remained on the other side.
For one second, nobody breathed.
Then one of the intruders called from the bedroom.
“Safe’s wired.”
Marcus released the handle.
His footsteps moved away.
Vincent waited until the bedroom floor stopped creaking.
Then he leaned toward the crack.
Marcus stood beside the exposed safe while the armed men studied its electronic lock.
The safe contained cash, passports and enough photographs to send half the city’s political class into hiding.
But Elena had said the attack was not about money.
Vincent looked at her.
“What is behind it?”
Her face changed.
“You don’t know?”
“Answer me.”
She swallowed.
“There’s a second compartment.”
Vincent’s grip tightened around the pistol.
He had installed the safe himself.
There was no second compartment.
At least none he had authorized.
“Who told you?”
“My father.”
Vincent’s expression hardened.
Elena had never mentioned a father.
“He worked in this house before I did,” she continued. “Twenty-two years ago.”
“What was his name?”
“Daniel Russo.”
Vincent knew the name immediately.
Daniel Russo had been his father’s accountant.
He disappeared the night Vincent’s father was murdered.
The family believed Daniel stole millions and fled.
Vincent had spent years hunting him.
“Your father is dead.”
Elena’s eyes filled, but she remained steady.
“He died three weeks ago.”
“Where?”
“In a motel outside Erie.”
Vincent stared at her.
“You knew who I was when you took this job.”
“Yes.”
“And you entered my bedroom every day looking for that compartment.”
“No. I came here to keep Marcus from finding it.”
Before Vincent could respond, a drill began whining softly in the bedroom.
The intruders were opening the wall around the safe.
Marcus watched them with impatient focus.
Whatever lay behind the steel mattered enough for him to betray his own brother.
Elena leaned closer.
“If he gets what’s inside, every person loyal to you becomes disposable.”
Vincent’s eyes returned to Marcus.
His brother had always wanted more power.
But power did not explain the fear hiding beneath his calm expression.
Marcus was not stealing an empire.
May you like
He was trying to erase something.
👉 Elena’s dead father had hidden proof inside Vincent’s wall before either Torino brother knew it existed.
