Chapter 11 - Daniel Russo’s Last Request
Vincent and Marcus were placed in separate vehicles.
Elena remained inside the mansion while agents documented the hidden compartment.
Before Vincent was taken away, she approached the lead investigator.
“There is another recording.”
The agent looked at her.
“Where?”
Elena reached inside the lining of her apron.
A tiny drive had been sewn beneath the fabric.
“My father’s final statement.”
“Why didn’t you give it to Vincent?”
“Because it was about him.”
The recording showed Daniel Russo in the motel room days before his death.
He looked weak.
But his voice remained clear.
“Vincent Torino is not innocent. He has ordered violence, concealed money and protected men who deserved prison.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
“But he did not kill Anthony. He did not create the federal arrangement. And he repeatedly stopped Marcus from targeting civilians, though he never knew Marcus was creating those threats himself.”
The statement documented specific occasions when Vincent rejected profitable crimes involving families, hospitals and children.
It did not erase his criminal life.
But it showed that Marcus had staged attacks and leaks to make Vincent appear unstable, then presented himself as the only man capable of controlling the organization.
Daniel concluded:
“If Vincent releases the evidence when he learns the truth, it means Anthony was right. There was still a line he would not cross.”
The recording became central to the investigation.
Vincent’s cooperation exposed corrupt agents and dismantled three violent organizations.
Prosecutors did not offer him freedom.
He had committed too much.
But they recognized the difference between confession before exposure and cooperation after capture.
Vincent had surrendered the files before the agents entered.
Marcus did not receive the same consideration.
His old immunity agreement protected only actions authorized decades earlier.
It did not cover Daniel Russo’s murder, the deaths of informants or the conspiracy inside Vincent’s mansion.
Elena testified.
Samuel testified.
The surviving intruders testified.
Marcus blamed everyone.
His brother.
His father.
The government.
Elena’s family.
He never blamed himself.
At the preliminary hearing, Marcus looked across the courtroom at Vincent.
“You gave everything away for a maid.”
Vincent answered quietly.
“No. I gave it away because she was braver than both of us.”
Elena heard him.
For the first time since her father died, she felt the Torino name losing its power over her life.
