Chapter 7 - The Voice of Anthony Torino

Vincent stopped breathing.
Anthony’s voice was older than he remembered.
Tired.
Controlled.
“Daniel Russo did not betray this family. I ordered him to hide the evidence because someone close to me had already sold six men to the Bellini organization.”
Marcus kept his pistol raised.
But his wrist trembled.
Anthony continued.
“The informant was my brother, Carlo. He used my youngest son as a messenger because no one searched a child.”
Vincent looked at Marcus.
“You carried the names.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“I didn’t know what they were.”
The recording answered him as though Anthony had expected the excuse.
“Marcus told me he did not understand what he carried. I believed him until I discovered payments made in his name after Carlo’s death.”
Vincent’s face hardened.
“You continued.”
“I was sixteen.”
“You continued after he died.”
Marcus shouted, “Because Father chose you!”
The sound exploded through the room.
The intruders flinched.
Anthony’s recording continued beneath the silence that followed.
“I confronted Marcus. He begged me not to tell Vincent. He said he would correct everything. Then he warned Carlo’s remaining partners that I had found the accounts.”
Vincent stared at his brother.
“They killed him because you warned them.”
Marcus’s eyes filled with rage.
“He was going to hand me to the police.”
“He was trying to save what was left of you.”
“No. He was protecting his favorite son.”
Vincent glanced toward the ledgers.
“And my signatures?”
“Carlo copied them.”
Anthony confirmed it moments later.
“Vincent signed routine company forms. Carlo duplicated those signatures to authorize payments. Vincent was careless, not complicit.”
Elena lowered her weapon slightly.
Her father had told the truth.
Marcus looked toward the recorder as if he wanted to shoot it.
Samuel stepped closer.
“Do it and you confirm everything.”
Anthony’s voice softened.
“Vincent, Daniel has instructions to preserve one final piece. It explains why Marcus could never be removed without destroying the organization.”
The recording stopped.
A mechanical panel opened beneath the cassette compartment.
Inside was a tiny data card.
Marcus moved first.
Elena fired once into the wooden bedframe beside his hand.
The impact stopped him without striking his body.
Vincent seized the card.
Marcus raised his pistol toward Elena.
Vincent aimed between his brother’s eyes.
“Try it.”

Marcus froze.
