Chapter 9 - The Men Who Refused to Die for Him

Marcus looked at the two intruders.

“What are you doing?”

One man answered, “We heard what happened to Keller.”

The man Marcus had shot moments earlier.

“You were going to do the same to us.”

Marcus raised his pistol.

Vincent fired once into the chandelier chain above him.

The sharp impact made Marcus flinch and look upward.

Samuel crossed the distance and stripped the weapon from his hand.

The intruders lowered theirs.

Vincent ordered them to kneel.

Neither resisted.

The balance of power had shifted completely.

Marcus stood unarmed in the bedroom he had entered as a conqueror.

Vincent looked at his brother.

“You could have left.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“And become what? Your forgotten little brother?”

“I gave you half the organization.”

“You gave me whatever you did not want to manage.”

“I trusted you with my life.”

“That was the insult.”

Vincent stared at him.

Marcus had never wanted partnership.

He wanted proof that he was greater than the brother who raised him.

Elena moved toward the black case.

She picked up her father’s photograph and pressed it against her chest.

Vincent watched her.

“You knew Marcus was coming tonight.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“My father left a scheduled message. It was sent after his death.”

“You used me as bait.”

Her eyes filled.

“I knew he would come if he thought you had found the wall.”

“And if you were wrong?”

“You would have killed me.”

Vincent considered the answer.

She had entered his home expecting death.

Not for money.

Not for revenge alone.

To clear her father’s name and expose a conspiracy that had survived twenty-two years.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Marcus looked toward the windows.

“You called the police?”

Elena nodded.

“Not the local police.”

Federal internal-affairs officers were coming.

The same division that had been investigating compromised agents connected to Marcus.

His old immunity agreement could not protect crimes committed outside its terms.

Murder.

Extortion.

Obstruction.

Conspiracy.

Marcus moved toward the bedroom doorway.

Samuel blocked him.

Vincent stepped closer.

“You wanted my empire.”

Marcus whispered, “I wanted you to know it was never truly yours.”

Vincent looked at the ledgers, the hidden recorder and Elena.

For the first time, he understood that Marcus was right about one thing.

An empire built on manipulated information and hidden bodies could never truly belong to anyone.

👉 Vincent could preserve his power by destroying the evidence—or end his family’s criminal legacy by releasing it.
