Chapter 1 - The Four Stars Behind The Desk

The office door swung open, and my boots struck the floor harder than I intended.
I had entered countless command offices before, but nothing prepared me for the man sitting behind Colonel Harris’s desk.
The elderly stranger I had helped months earlier was no longer wearing a worn jacket.
He was wearing a perfectly pressed Marine Corps dress uniform.
Four silver stars rested on each shoulder.
General Robert Callahan.
My stomach dropped.
The man I thought was just an old civilian was one of the most powerful Marines in the country.
Colonel Harris stood behind the desk, rigid and silent.
The general slowly lifted his eyes.
“Close the door, Corporal Reynolds.”
I turned immediately, shut it, and returned to attention.
But my eyes betrayed me.
They moved toward the stars.
Then back to his face.
I tried to control my breathing.
I tried to remember my training.
But one thought kept repeating.
Why would a four-star general remember me?
The general stood slowly.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“You recognize me now,” he said.
I swallowed.
“Sir…”
The words barely came out.
“I didn’t know who you were.”
The general studied me.
No anger.
No smile.
Just that unreadable expression.
“That’s precisely why I remembered you.”
Colonel Harris pushed a sealed Marine folder across the desk.
I stared at it.
A document.
A meeting.
A secret.

And somehow, I was at the center of it.
