The idea that someone inside the Marines was involved felt impossible.
But impossible had a way of becoming reality.
The folder contained names.
Access records.
Messages.
Someone had been searching for information about me.
Not my service.
My connection to General Callahan.
The general looked disappointed.
Not surprised.
That told me he expected betrayal.
I asked:
“Sir, why me?”
He looked at the sealed folder.
“Because someone wants what is inside.”
I stared at it.
“But I don’t even know what it is.”
“Exactly.”
That was the first answer that made sense.
Someone believed I had information.
But I didn’t.
The general handed the folder to Colonel Harris.
“Move him.”
I immediately responded.
“Sir, respectfully, I can handle this.”
The general looked at me.
“I know.”
