Chapter 2 - The Stranger I Never Asked About

I kept staring at the folder.
I wanted answers.
But years in the Marines taught me patience.
Questions came after orders.
The general walked around the desk.
“You helped someone without knowing his position.”
I remained still.
“Yes, sir.”
“You didn’t ask for anything.”
“No, sir.”
“You didn’t take advantage.”
“No, sir.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“That is rare.”
I remembered the day.
A simple moment.
A stranger struggling.
A decision to help.
Nothing more.
At least, that was what I thought.
Colonel Harris watched me carefully.
“Corporal Reynolds, do you understand why you’re here?”
“No, sir.”
“Good.”
The answer surprised me.
The general placed his hand on the folder.
“Because if you believed you knew, you would already have the wrong idea.”
My confusion grew.
Then he opened a drawer.
Inside was another file.
My name was written on the cover.
My heart tightened.
I had never seen it before.
The general noticed my reaction.
“You were never supposed to find this file.”
I looked at Colonel Harris.
He looked away.
That bothered me more than anything.
Because Colonel Harris knew something.

And he was afraid.
