The blinds moved slightly from the afternoon wind.
But the room felt colder.
General Callahan didn’t react.
That scared me.
A person who remained calm during bad news usually knew more than everyone else.
Colonel Harris checked the message again.
“No identification.”
The general nodded.
“Expected.”
I looked between them.
“Sir, expected?”
Nobody answered.
That was becoming a pattern.
The general finally said:
“You helped me because you believed it was the right thing.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Now someone wants to know why.”
I looked at the folder.
“Because of this?”
“Because of what it represents.”
That answer created more questions.
The general ordered Colonel Harris to secure the office.
Then he looked at me.
“You need to understand something, Corporal.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Your greatest mistake was thinking that day was ordinary.”
I remembered the stranger.
The simple conversation.
The small favor.
The general’s expression hardened.
