Chapter 5 - The Mission Behind A Simple Favor

The general finally told me part of the truth.
Not everything.
Just enough.
The day I helped him, he was not lost.
He was observing.
Watching.
Testing something.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Sir, was I being tested?”
“No.”
A pause.
“You were being seen.”
That answer bothered me.
Because I didn’t want recognition.
I wanted clarity.
The general explained that leadership wasn’t always measured during battles.
Sometimes it was measured when nobody knew who was watching.
Then he looked at my uniform.
“You acted like a Marine before anyone knew you were one.”
I stayed silent.
The compliment felt heavier than criticism.
Then Colonel Harris returned.
He placed a second folder on the desk.
“General, we found the leak.”
The general opened it.
His expression changed for the first time.
Not fear.
Disappointment.
“Who?”
Colonel Harris looked at me.
And I knew before he spoke.
