Chapter 3 - The Record That Should Not Exist

The general did not open the file.
That bothered me.
If he wanted me to know something, why keep it closed?
Instead, he asked questions.
About my service.
My decisions.
My family.
My character.
Not my achievements.
My choices.
That confused me.
Then Colonel Harris finally spoke.
“General, should he know?”
The room went silent.
The general looked at him.
“Not everything.”
Not everything.
Those two words stayed with me.
Because they meant there was something.
Something everyone else knew.
Except me.
The general picked up the sealed folder.
“Your actions that day told me something.”
“What, sir?”
“That you help people when nobody is watching.”
I said nothing.
Because I didn’t know where this conversation was going.
Then he moved the folder closer.
“This is not a reward.”
My eyes went to the seal.
“Then what is it?”
The general looked directly at me.
“A responsibility.”
Before I could answer, Colonel Harris received a message.
His expression changed.
A small reaction.
But I saw it.
“What happened, sir?”
He hesitated.
Then said:

“Someone knows you’re here.”
